The Irreducible

The Irreducible is a visually driven performance work that moves between theatre, live art, and installation. The work is grounded in trans embodiment and is concerned with states of transformation — bodies shifting, materials changing, environments breathing and responding.

Aesthetically, the project leans toward the tactile and the mutable: surfaces that ooze or stretch, spaces that feel alive, and design elements that transform alongside the performer. The work prioritises sensation, atmosphere, and presence over linear narrative, inviting audiences into a shared experience of becoming.

At the centre of the project is an intention to create a rehearsal and performance environment where trans experience is recognised as organically human, transformational and multifaceted — not only in what is shown, but in how the work is made. The Irreducible is process-led, collaborative, and adaptive, with a strong visual and spatial language designed for festival, gallery, and touring contexts.

The work is being developed as part of Theatre Works’ 2026 season at the Explosives Factory, St Kilda.

Financial Structure

This project is being developed on a profit-share model. At this stage, we are unable to make financial guarantees.

We are actively:

  • Working on funding applications

  • Undertaking fundraising alongside development

Any income generated through the season will be shared according to agreed terms, with transparency and care built into the process.

Collaboration & Creative Approach

We are seeking trans, non-binary and allied collaborators across key creative and technical roles to join the project. This is a collaborative, process-driven work that values shared authorship, curiosity, and care.

All collaborators will be invited into an open, communicative rehearsal process where experimentation, flexibility, and mutual support are central.

Roles we are currently inviting:

  • Scenic / Design / Build
We are seeking a collaborator or collaborators to co-design and build the set, working closely as a team with:

    Cohan (they/them) — Artist / Director

Kat Glass (they/them) — Artistic Producer

Em Jevons (they/them) - Scenic Artist and Mech

  • Set and costume elements are being developed early so they can be fully integrated into rehearsals. This is a hands-on, material-led collaboration with an emphasis on shared decision-making.

  • Lighting Design
A lighting designer interested in responsive, atmospheric design that can evolve alongside the work in rehearsal and be adapted across different contexts (theatre, festival, gallery).

  • Stage Management / Operator
We are seeking a stage manager who will also operate the show across the season. This role is integral to the rhythm, care, and flow of the work, and will be embedded in the rehearsal process from early stages.

Other Creative Offerings:

  • We are also open to hearing from trans and non-binary creatives who feel drawn to the project and have a skill, practice, or idea they would like to bring. If you’re excited by the work and can imagine a meaningful way to contribute, we warmly invite you to get in touch.

  • We would LOVE to play with a bit of embedded programming, to meet someone with rigging experience, or devised movement practice for example.

Looking Ahead

This season is a key development moment for The Irreducible. Alongside the public season, we are prioritising high-quality documentation to support:

  • European festival opportunities

  • Gallery and installation contexts

  • Future touring and re-staging

If you are a trans or non-binary artist interested in collaborative making, spatial experimentation, and building work that can live across multiple contexts, we would love to hear from you.

Please get in touch via Blank Space Productions with a sense of what you’d like to bring to the project.
